New Neighbor

So over the weekend, we were at my parent's house. They have a lot of land, and Rocky is relatively good off-leash, so he always gets to run around and chase balls out there.

However, this time, my mother opened the door to let him out (which I told her not to do w/out checking around first) and he instantly bolted off, barking at the new neighbor they have nearby. Of course, I had to chase him down, and he avoided letting me grab him while still growling and barking at the poor man next door. He was really nice about it, so I just focused on getting Rocky under control.

Now, what I don't get is this: I understand if someone comes into our home and he barks at them like this, if he thinks it is his territory, but outside? Why can't he understand there are other people in the world? Any thoughts?

  1. You might try some dog training sites on the web or invest in some sessions with a professional trainer. What breed of dog is Rocky?

  2. Rocky is, from what I can tell, part Chihuahua, part Italian Greyhound and part Basenji. We have done group training and he does fine in that, passed 2 classes last December, and did fine with all the dogs except for the really big ones. However, even in the classes, the dogs would play, and Rocky would join but just run around acting all nervous, he would never roll over or play with any toys. He has a select few toys he does play with, but only at home. I want to try a one on one trainer but have to research them first (I know of a few, and one already I don't want to use because they use the same technique on all dogs, which they shouldn't, because all dogs are different). Too bad Ceasar is so far away and so expensive!!!

  3. Wow, what a combination! Those are all high strung breeds so I'd guess he's acting pretty much as I'd expect!

    Patience, you know. Patience. Lol.
